LDP Condemns Government for Evicting Makongeni Residents Under the Affordable Housing Programme

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), through its Secretary General Dr. Denise Kodhe, has strongly criticized the government of President William Ruto for the ongoing eviction of Makongeni residents to pave the way for the Affordable Housing Project.

Dr. Kodhe questioned the logic of a government claiming to build affordable homes for citizens while simultaneously displacing them and rendering vulnerable families homeless.

“The mandate of any government is to protect its people and ensure their welfare—not to destroy livelihoods under the guise of development,” he stated.

LDP described it as shameful for the administration to boast about expanding housing infrastructure while failing to provide alternative settlement options for residents who are forcibly removed from their long-term homes.

The party urged the Kenyan government to emulate Rwanda, where authorities ensured proper compensation and relocation plans for citizens displaced during the expansion of Kigali city. LDP noted that Kenya’s approach lacks empathy, planning, and fairness.

The majority of those being evicted from Makongeni are retirees and former Kenya Railways Corporation employees who had been allowed to settle in the area as part of their retirement and compensation benefits. LDP expressed disappointment that the same Kenya Railways has abandoned its former staff at their time of greatest need.

The party warned that Kenyans are being pushed into homelessness by the very government that is supposed to safeguard them—yet few leaders are speaking against what they termed a heinous and unjustifiable action.

LDP therefore calls on all Kenyans to stand in solidarity with the victims of the Affordable Housing evictions and to mount pressure on the government to immediately halt the displacement of citizens from their lawful places of residence.
